Howard County Home to Some of the Nation’s Fastest Growing Businesses

Howard County businesses are well represented in Inc. Magazine’s latest list of the nation’s 5,000 fastest growing companies. The annual rankings report is based on the three year growth rate of these businesses from 2010 through 2013. 121 companies in Maryland made the prestigious list. 22 of those businesses are located in Howard County communities from Savage to Ellicott City and Columbia.

LT. Governor Brown, Howard County Executive Ulman Announce Support for Coastal Companies’ New Headquarters

Today Lt. Governor Anthony Brown joined Howard County Executive Ken Ulman to announce state and county support for a new corporate headquarters in Laurel for The Coastal Companies, a leading Mid Atlantic produce and dairy supplier. Officials also held a ceremonial groundbreaking for the new 240,000 square-foot headquarters, which is expected to be complete by early 2016. The new facilities will house the operations of various operating divisions of The Coastal Companies including Coastal Sunbelt Produce, East Coast Fresh, Cold Chain Logistics and Cold Chain Imports as well as The Coastal Companies Foundation. The company plans to create 400 new jobs by 2018.

3D Maryland Launches Workshops and Seminars at Maryland Center for Entrepreneurship

The Howard County Economic Development Authority (HCEDA) today announced that 3D Maryland is launching its first series of instructional classes and hands-on workshops designed to train professionals and non-professionals on the technologies involved in 3D printing and additive manufacturing.

Executive Ulman Helps Break Ground on Major New Project for Downtown Columbia

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman helped break ground today for Little Patuxent Square, a major commercial and residential project that is a key part of the next wave of growth in Downtown Columbia. Being developed by LPP Investors and constructed by Costello Construction of MD, Inc., Little Patuxent Square is the first major commercial building to be constructed in Downtown Columbia in more than a decade. Most of the Class A office space has already been leased, and the project will be built to high efficiency standards.

Complexities come with doing business with the government, stemming from such areas as regulations, contract terms, and compliance requirements, to name a few.  Rich Wilkinson, of Watkins Meegan, Accounting and Business Advisory firm, will give an overview of contract types, including an examination of the differences in risk, profitability and the obligations of the parties. Watkins Meegan will discuss the influence of government contracting regulations on financial reporting including: purpose behind policies and procedures; importance of documentation; labor and timekeeping systems; understanding revenue recognition for different types of contracts; cost principles regarding direct, indirect and unallowable costs, and cost allocations.
