Film Feastival Draws Record Crowd to Kick off Farm2Table Restaurant Week and the Buy Local Maryland Challenge

July 17, 2013

Ellicott City, MD (July, 17 2013) – Record crowds showed up Tuesday night for the 4th annual Film Feastival at Clark’s Elioak Farm in Ellicott City. The event, which kicked off the Farm2Table Restaurant Weeks and the Buy Local Maryland Challenge, drew a crowd of 280 people and raised over a $1,000 for the Howard County Food Bank.

This event featured several area restaurants taking part in the Farm2Table Restaurant weeks. They provided attendees with samples of their specialty cuisine, made with locally sourced food, that they are offering during the restaurant weeks. Also represented at the event were several local farms and CSA’s (Community Supported Agriculture) encouraging people to purchase locally sourced food.

“This event is a great way to help people connect with the Howard County agriculture community,” said Kathy Zimmerman, Agricultural Development Manager at the Howard County Economic Development Authority. “If we could get every family in the county to purchase just $8 of produce per week from a local farmer, we could keep $16 million in the local economy.”

Last night’s event was open to the public at no charge, but donations at the door were being collected to benefit the Howard County Food Bank. A total of $1,034 was collected during the 3-hour event.

“This event was a huge success,” said Rachelina Bonacci, CEO of Howard County Tourism & Promotion. “Now it is our hope that we are able to carry this success through the Farm2Table Restaurant Week and Buy Local Maryland Challenge, and into our local farmers markets and farm stands.”

The Buy Local Maryland Challenge will be held from July 21 to 29 and the Farm2Table Restaurant Weeks runs from July 17 to August 5.
