FLAVORx, the Columbia-based Medicine Hero for your Child

Friday, March 29, 2019

On March 28, 2019, the Howard County Economic Development Authority (HCEDA) joined health tech innovators, FLAVORx, for the reopening of their new facility in Columbia, which now accommodates their company of 50.

FLAVORx was founded in 1994 in an act of desperation, when a local pharmacist had an ongoing challenge to get his epileptic granddaughter to take her medicine. After many late nights of testing, the pharmacist and his son created a flavored solution to mask the bitter taste of her medicine. To their delight, she took the medicine with ease from there on out.

Knowing that there must be other children struggling to take their medicine, the pharmacist and his son created the first fully automated flavoring and water dispensing machine for pharmacies to mask the taste of medications. The medication flavoring system was sold to other local pharmacies and soon became such a hit that within months, pharmacies across the nation were interested in sharing it with their customers.

Now, FLAVORx is available in over 46,000 chain and independent pharmacies across North America, including CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, and Walmart pharmacies. In fact, as of August 2016, over 100 million prescriptions have been flavored across the nation. With its popularity, FLAVORx was also able to launch a line of pet-friendly flavors for animals, from salmon for cats to savory bacon for dogs.

Since their launch, FLAVORx has consistently been acknowledged as a leader in the Maryland Bio-tech industry by organizations such as SMART CEO, Maryland Tech Council and Fortune Magazine in addition to being featured on The Today Show, Parents Magazine, Shark Tank, Inc. Magazine and the NBC Nightly News. With their success, FLAVORx was able to not only grow their team, but expand into a larger facility to meet their growing customer demand.
