Homegrown in Howard County: Farmers’ Markets in Focus

Monday, April 18, 2022

For a real taste of Howard County, head to our Farmers’ Markets three seasons a year. From May to November, our Farmers’ Markets are community hubs where pride runs deep and agricultural abundance is on display. While people visit the markets for produce, meat, dairy, flowers, and artisan goods, they leave with so much more. Our markets are places for connection, reuniting neighbors and friends, and sustaining the farmers that shape our economy. These encounters feel great, and the products taste even better. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a regular patron, make the most out of your trip to the Farmers’ Market with the following tips.

1. Enjoy the Atmosphere
Our open air Farmers’ Markets engage the senses. Whether you visit on a weekday lunch break or plan a weekend meetup with friends, the simple pleasures are many. From fresh cut flowers to farmhouse bread, cold brew coffee to cinnamon rolls, the smells are tempting and the energy is high. Artisan demonstrations and colorful displays encourage leisurely shopping and Instagrammable moments.

2. Ask What’s in Season
Ask vendors what’s in season, because it’s ripe and nutritious. Vendors may respond with a recipe, or an anecdote about their harvest. Some vendors are multi-generational family farms, and others are new on the scene. Regardless of background, every vendor has an origin story to tell and enthusiasm to share. Access a seasonal produce guide here.

3. Follow Up with Farm Visits
Howard County is home to over 300 farms. Shopping at the Farmers’ Market is a perfect starting point, but visiting the farms brings the experience full circle. Local farms are increasingly diversifying their offerings to restore the health of the soil, reduce environmental impact, and remain competitive. From pick-your-own produce to cooking classes, agricultural camps to nursery rhyme tours, creativity advances our rural legacy. Plan your farm adventure here.

Howard County farmers are our neighbors and friends. Supporting them keeps our economy strong and community spirit high. Our 2022 Farmers’ Market schedule is below. We’ll see you at the market!
