Howard County Farm Tours: Heron’s Meadow and TLV Tree Farm

Thursday, October 29, 2020

On average, our food travels over 1,800 miles and spends five to seven days in a truck before it reaches our grocery stores. Buying local means the food we consume could be harvested in the morning and consumed by night. Providing Howard County citizens with the freshest, healthiest locally grown products has become a priority for many of our farmsDuring the interview, two farmers shared their unique products they sell within their shops and farmer’s market, and how their business models have pivoted to attract consumers.

Heron’s Meadow Farm

Located in Western Howard County, Heron’s Meadow Farm is Maryland’s first tea farm. Owner and Operator, Lori Baker, has utilized her engineering background to reclaim her purchased farm land into an environment for her tea to thrive by incorporating hand craft tea accessories and producing cross pollenated honey flavors.

Home to BLTeas and MudPi Studios, Heron’s Meadow Farm offers fields of tranquil views, flavorful teas, fresh picked herbs, and handcrafted stoneware pottery. Visitors to the farm can sample teas, shop for their new favorite mug from the mug tree, enjoy the view of the tea fields, and walk through their herb gardens.

Triadelphia Lake View (TLV) Tree Farm

The TLV Tree Farm has been in the Brown Family since 1896. Located in Glenelg, The Triadelphia Lake View (TLV) Tree Farm proves eating fresh is more accessible than most think, offering a rich variety of plants, produce, canned and baked goods, liquors, and meats – all available for drive-thru pick up.

TLV started as a dairy farm, but has since transformed into a place where locals can pick their own strawberries in the summer, pumpkins in the fall, and pine trees during the winter holidays. Additionally, visitors can purchase freshly grown fruits and vegetables and have access to organic eggs in addition to meats (pork, beef, lamb, and chickens). In response to COVID-19, TLV Tree Farm has converted their outdoor market into a drive-thru to ensure social distancing and safety for their consumers.
